Why I started my business and the story behind the brand.

Today I will be talking a bit about my business. Why I started? Who inspired me? I’ve been wanting to write this post for a long time but needed to get my mind set before I was able to put the story to words without crying.

If you been following my personal or business page on instagram then you must have known a small story but never have anyone heard the full version. So I hope you will stick around til the end and I will try my best to keep it short.

About my Brand.

Jemini Beauty was born in 2015 but was not officially launched until April of 2016. I create makeup brushes that are vegan friendly. For every purchase made 10% of the sales are donated to a Childhood Cancer Foundation. Yes, there is a reason why which I will talk about in a bit. Jemini was named after my daughter and my inspiration comes from my little sister who had passed away last year.

The Story why I wanted to start my brand?

Back in 2014, we found out that my little sister, Jenesis, had cancer called Osteosarcoma. She was only 11 years old at the time and it was one of the hardest day of our lives. Right then and there, she had to start chemo then became like every 2 weeks. Since it was in the bone the treatment had to be much stronger then normal.

My parents had to go back and forth from home to the hospital. My dad had to quite his job because he wanted to be there for my sister. Four of my siblings were going to and from my house and my parents. Thats when I wanted to do something more to help them, even though I was already doing a lot. I wanted to help my family finacially since I knew money was getting tight for them. It wasn’t cheap being at the hospital.

It Doesn’t stop there..

After a few months of treatment, my little sister had to do one last chemo before the big surgery on her leg. She really wasn’t suppose to have it but the doctors just squeezed it in at last minute. The chemo had became tougher to come out of her system, she knew something was wrong for a couple of days but the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong.

A few days later, her organs started shutting down, it became harder for her to breathe and was sent to the ICU. They had to put her under sedation, a breathing tube down her throat and since her blood had poison from the chemo they put her on a dialysis machine.

At that point I had to put my business on hold. I couldn’t start something when I had to be there for my little sister and family. For the next 4 months she was on tons of machines, so many doctors and nurses kept telling us she wasn’t going to make it there was nothing they can do, but we kept holding onto our faith, continue praying, and fighting for her.

I knew in my heart that God had a plan for her and since my little sister’s faith was so strong I knew this would not be how we last saw her. After 4 months she was finally aware but had to take things slow and little by little machines were coming off.

Happy Time.

Jenesis had to learn a lot and had to do physical therapy until she was finally able to come home. During those times, my parents lost their home and had to move in with me. The ICU became our second home for 9 months straights, that’s how long Jenesis had to stay in the hospital. My parents and I took turns staying the night at the hospital with my sister so she was never alone. Even though she was getting better and stronger we still had a few little problems.

In December of 2015 before Christmas, she was finally able to come home. Jenesis still had to sleep in a hospital bed which she wasn’t looking foward to but just wanted to get out the hospital, she also had to have an IV pole in her room and had weekly visits with a home nurse. We were just so happy and blessed to have my sister home with us again.

Once she was home, I started working on my brand. My little sister helped me a bit on the brush design and add in her input. I was excited that we can have something where we can work on together since we were really close, she was not only my sister but my baby as she would say.

After a few weeks her cancer did come back and had begun to spread through out her chest and stomache. On February 28th 2016, was the day she took her last breathe. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of her. If you ever lost someone you loved then you know how it feels. I know the pain will never go away but I can continue to grow and keep her memory alive.

Why I finally started?

(The first set I launched)

I was debating wether or not to continue after losing my sister. Honestly, I thought this could have been something that we started together. I already was in production and had my logo made so I couldn’t change the name of my brand.

A month after, I finally decided to continue with it and dedicate the brand to her. I wanted to do something in honor of my sister and help families that are going through the things that we once did. My sister was the strongest and bravest person I knew, Jenesis fought so hard and held on for so long.

Jemini had officially launched

I wanted to make this brand magical! Every design I do is what I know my sister would have loved. She was into unicorns, glitter, pink, neon colors, just anything girly and sparkly. Jemini was created for Jenesis and of course my daughter because she reminds us so much of her. I have so many designs I’ve been working on for months which I hope one day I can bring to life.

Each month I donate to a different childhood cancer foundation that had once helped my family when they were at the hospital. Currently, I’m working on my own foundation which I hope to start soon with my family.

From now through December 18th, 10% of the sales will be donated to sponsor a family or 2 this Christmas at our local hospital. Our real goal is to sponsor up to 3 families but will need your help.

Thank you!

This business is really important to me and I wanted to share why it was. One day I hope I can continue to bring more products in honor of my sister and help more children. There’s always a story behind a brand and this one was mine.

For being a reader, I’m offering a special code “LOVEJEM” for 25% off your order. With a purchase of $50 or more you will receive our mermaid makeup bag FREE. No code needed, just use the discount code as I mention above.
